Discoveries along Romanesque Road: Merseburg

winter term 2018-19

Along Romanesque Road lies the small town of Merseburg. Never heard of it before? This will surely change after our exciting excursion! Merseburg has many things to offer. Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg, who lived here about a century ago, influenced the city that some people today call “mother of all cities in central Germany” (Source: https://www.merseburg.de/de/tourismus.html).
The town´s historical center strikes with its medieval cathedral and the castle. But, there are more things waiting to be discovered even underground. The “Deep Cellar” gives us the opportunity to explore a medieval maze of arches.
First, we will take a tram to Schkopau from where we will walk along the Saale river towards Merseburg. Afterwards we will have a guided tour (in English) within the cathedral where we will also walk up to the towers. During the tour we will find out about the magic spells of Merseburg and listen to medieval bells ringing.
To process all this new information we will have lunch in a restaurant together. Vegetarian or vegan options are also available.
After our stroll through the city including the “Crooked Gate” we will focus on Merseburg´s underground. We will take another tour through the “Deep Cellar” (in German, with translators) it might get chilly, so please bring warm clothing.
In case you would like to stay in Merseburg longer, you will have the opportunity to stay in several cafés in town.
Your participation fee of 10,00 € will cover the train fare, the guided Bauhaus tour and entry fee, and lunch.
